The best form of transportation for short distances is a bike. You can hire it everywhere. It's good to have one when you are staying in the city of Kos. Then you can easily get to all monuments and archeological sites. But check what you hire first. You can hire a scooter aswell, it's up to you. But be careful with driving too long time, the sun is shining strong and you could cook your brain.:) Another tip is for buses.
